Overview
The Gynaecology Department is led by a team of 19 permanent Consultants, many of whom have specialist expertise in specific areas of gynaecology. The team may also be supported by locum Consultants when required.
All referrals to the Gynaecology Department are reviewed and triaged by a member of the clinical team to ensure you are booked into the clinic that is most appropriate for your individual needs. Please note that waiting times can vary between clinics, and some specialist clinics may have longer waiting times due to high demand.
What to expect
At your appointment, you may be seen by a Consultant, Doctor, Nurse Consultant, Clinical Nurse Specialist, or Nurse Practitioner. Our multidisciplinary team works closely together to ensure you receive the most appropriate assessment, treatment, and advice.

- Urogynaecology: Assessment and treatment of bladder, pelvic floor and urinary symptoms such as leakage, urgency, frequent urination and pelvic organ prolapse.
- Colposcopy: A detailed examination of the cervix using a special microscope to investigate abnormal cervical screening results or other cervical concerns.
- Gynaecology Oncology: Specialist care for women with suspected or diagnosed cancers of the reproductive system, including the uterus (womb), ovaries, cervix, vulva and vagina.
- Fertility: Assessment and treatment for individuals and couples who are having difficulty conceiving or would like advice about their reproductive health.
- Endometriosis: Diagnosis and management of endometriosis, a condition where cells similar to ones in the lining of the uterus (womb) are found elsewhere in the body which can cause inflammation, pain and scar tissue.
- Outpatient Hysteroscopy (diagnostic and therapeutic): A procedure performed in clinic to examine the inside of the uterus (womb) and, where needed, treat problems such as polyps, abnormal bleeding or retained tissue.
- Outpatient Minor Operations: Small gynaecological procedures carried out in the outpatient setting without the need for a hospital stay to diagnose or treat a range of common conditions.
- Outpatient Endometrial Ablation: A treatment performed in the outpatient setting to reduce or stop heavy menstrual bleeding by removing or destroying the lining of the womb.
- Recurrent Miscarriage: Specialist investigations and support for those who have experienced repeated pregnancy losses.
- Menopause/HRT: Advice and treatment to help manage menopause symptoms, including discussion and prescription of hormone replacement therapy (HRT), where appropriate.
- Early Pregnancy Unit: A specialist service providing assessment, investigation and care for women experiencing complications or concerns during the first 16 weeks of pregnancy.
- Gynaecology Assessment Unit: A specialist service providing assessment, investigation and treatment for women with urgent gynaecological concerns.
Referrals to the Gynaecology Department can be made by your GP through the NHS e-Referral Service, or by a hospital Consultant, Nurse, Midwife, or other healthcare professional.
We do not accept self-referrals to any of our services.
