Early Pregnancy Unit (EPU) & Gynaecology Assessment Unit (GAU)

Our Early Pregnancy Unit (EPU) and Gynaecology Assessment Unit (GAU) at Darent Valley Hospital provides specialist care for women experiencing early pregnancy complications and acute gynaecological issues.

Gynaecology Assessment Unit (GAU) Services

  • Referral basis via Emergency Department or GP

  • Acute gynaecological assessments including pelvic/vaginal exams, scans and management plans. Other assessments may include blood and urine tests

  • Postoperative follow-up for ongoing symptoms

Early Pregnancy Unit Services

  • Care for women between 5-16 weeks pregnant with symptoms such as severe vomiting, pain, or bleeding

  • You can be referred via GP, midwife or A&E. Patients will then be contacted via telephone by the EPU in order to schedule an appointment. Those with a history of 3 or more miscarriages or previous ectopic pregnancies can self-refer by telephone
  • Assessment for high-risk ectopic pregnancies
  • Supportive environment with quick assessment
  • Assessment may include blood tests, urine test, examination and a scan as needed (scans performed before 10 weeks of pregnancy are done internally by placing a small probe inside the vagina)
  • Management of miscarriage and ectopic pregnancies, including inpatient medical care
  • Dedicated telephone support during working hours
  • Access to a specialist bereavement nurse to provide emotional support and guidance following pregnancy loss
