The Endoscopy Clinical team are pleased to share that they have achieved a new milestone for the Endoscopy Service at Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust (DGT).

The Endoscopy Service at DGT is the first in the region to introduce transnasal endoscopy to improve waiting times for patients on the faster diagnostic pathway. We have acquired state-of-the-art transnasal endoscopes specifically for this purpose. This procedure, whilst similar to a traditional upper GI Endoscopy, involves examination of the upper GI tract using a scope that is introduced via the nose (rather than the mouth).

The use of the transnasal route has the advantage of the endoscopy procedure being better tolerated by patients, with less “gagging” and a faster recovery time. Patients do not need sedation for the procedure and are able to talk to the team whilst the endoscopy is being performed. The first transnasal endoscopy at DGT was performed by Dr. Kothari and team on the 17 April 2024 with a view to expanding this service further.

The Trust's Endoscopy Service will shortly be preparing a business case to develop a one-stop upper GI diagnostic service, improving the wait times for patients on the suspected cancer pathway.  We have been approached by the cancer alliance to facilitate developing this service in the other centres in Kent.

Speaking about this ground-breaking leap, DGT’s Consultant Physician and Clinical Lead for Endoscopy, Hepatology and Gastroenterology, Dr. Chirag Kothari, said “This advancement underpins our Endoscopy department’s dedication to prioritising patient experience and clinical outcomes. As pioneers in the region, we are excited to innovate and expand the service for patients across Kent.”

Well done, team!
