Consultant Physician and Gastroenterologist at Darent Valley Hospital appointed January 2004.

Dr Mairs qualified from King's College Hospital, London in 1993. He later entered the South Thames East Training Rotation in Gastroenterology and General Internal Medicine in 1998. His training included all aspects of Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. This included Intensive Care, Coronary Care and Acute Medicine. Specialist gastroenterology training was completed at King's Liver Unit and at Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals, London.

His interests include all aspects of Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology including inflammatory bowel disease, dyspepsia and reflux, nutrition, coeliac disease, hepatology and biliary diseases, cancer screening and endoscopy.

Services 

Dr Mairs takes an active role in General Medicine at Darent Valley as well as providing an expanding Specialist Service in Gastroenterology. This involves outpatient consultations providing advice and treatment for a wide range of conditions as outlined above as well as skilled endoscopic procedures such as gastroscopy, colonoscopy and small bowel capsule endoscopy. These include therapeutic procedures, which avoid open surgery such as polypectomy, argon photocoagulation and endoscopic mucosal resection. 

Dr Mairs works closely with a team of expert radiologists at Darent Valley who provide access to all the imaging modalities such as ultrasound, nuclear medicine, barium examinations, high resolution CT scanning and MRI including MRCP.

In order to provide these services at Darent Valley Dr Mairs is supported by a wide range of fully trained hospital staff such as consultants, pathologists, nurses, surgeons, doctors, pharmacists and dieticians to mention just a few.
