One Year On: An Insight into Robotic-Assisted Surgery at DGT

On Tuesday 22 April, Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust’s Colorectal Consultant Surgeon and Robotic Clinical Co-ordinator, Mr Piero Nastro, hosted a special event celebrating our progress in robotic-assisted surgery since the arrival of the da Vinci system last year.

We were joined by Trust colleagues, industry peers, local authorities and the KSS Head of School of Surgery, for an exclusive look into the real-world impact of this cutting-edge technology, brought to life through powerful patient stories and an insight into how our surgeons are trained on the robotic system. Attendees were taken on a journey through the challenges faced so far, the solutions being implemented, and a forward-looking glimpse into the future strategy of our robotic-assisted surgery programme.

Speakers highlighted the significant improvements in clinical outcomes, including reduced complication and conversion rates and quicker recovery times compared to traditional laparoscopic surgery.

The event also featured two engaging panel discussions, led by a group of our consultants and surgeons, who welcomed insightful and thought-provoking questions from an enthusiastic audience. We were also honoured to be joined by three of our patients, who shared their powerful personal experiences of robotic-assisted surgery and their positive journeys to recovery.

Reflecting on the evening, Mr. Nastro said: “This event was not only a celebration of our achievements, but a reflection of the incredible teamwork and innovation driving our robotic-assisted surgery programme forward. Since the arrival of the da Vinci system, we’ve seen first-hand how this technology is transforming patient outcomes and enhancing surgical precision. It’s been a privilege to lead this journey with such passionate colleagues, and I’m excited for what the future holds.”

Thank you to everyone who attended, to our Chief Medical Officer, Dr Tom Clark for chairing the event, to our guest speakers, and of course, Mr. Piero Nastro, for his dedication and passion in making the Trust’s robotic-surgery vision come to life.
