Today, staff, patients, veterans, and visitors came together in a spirit of reflection, respect, and remembrance to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day.
The day began at the main entrance of Darent Valley Hospital, where the Union Flag was ceremonially raised. Staff, management, patients, veterans, and volunteers gathered for the occasion. We were honoured to welcome local veterans and their families to the hospital. Many shared personal stories and memories throughout the day, creating heartfelt connections with both staff and patients. Among them was the Trust’s Maternity Clinical Systems Manager, Paul Seymour, who told us how proud he was to represent his father—a WWII soldier who was wounded in combat. With a family history steeped in military service, including a grandfather who fought in WWI, Paul expressed how meaningful it was to see the hospital embrace the commemorations so fully. His sentiments were echoed by many others, contributing to a powerful and emotional atmosphere of shared remembrance.
We were also privileged to welcome the Deputy Mayor of Dartford, Councillor Peter Whapshott, who joined the commemoration. During his visit, he spent time speaking with veterans, staff, and volunteers, and shared his thoughts on the day:
“The respect for VE Day is absolutely incredible,” the Deputy Mayor said. “Across all nations, backgrounds and ages—from the veterans to the nurseries—everyone has shown an amazing amount of support and respect.” He also highlighted the importance of passing these traditions on to future generations, sharing that he had spent part of his day celebrating VE Day with local nursery children and was delighted to see them engaging with the event.
The hospital was adorned with flags, memorabilia, and displays created by staff and volunteers. From the main entrance to the wards, the decorations captured the spirit of the day—one of unity, pride, and gratitude.
Near the main entrance, volunteers shared information about the many ways our Trust supports members of the armed forces and their families, raising awareness of the services available to them.
A number of organisations also supported our celebrations and we extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to making the day such a success. Most of all, we thank our veterans and their families for sharing their time, stories, and presence with us—it was an honour.
