Darent Valley Hospital was delighted to have writer, broadcaster and author of God Is Not A White Man: And Other Revelations, Chine McDonald, as a voluntary representative for service users on our interview panel for the new Director of Midwifery, yesterday.

Following a poor birth experience at a southeast London hospital in 2017 due to fear of “conforming to any harmful stereotypes of Black womanhood”, Chine chose to have her next baby at Darent Valley as a result of the work we have done to tackle inequalities in this area. We were extremely proud to learn that our midwives at Darent Valley helped her to have a more positive, redemptive birth experience.

Thank you, Chine, for your valuable feedback and for being part of our stakeholder panel.

Chine’s story about her previous birth experience as a result of the stark inequalities Black mothers face during pregnancy and childbirth can be read in her article here: https://www.independent.co.uk/voices/black-women-maternity-deaths-b1823918.html
