Bernie Visits Darent Valley Hospital'Bernie' a unique mobile information space from Macmillan Cancer Support, has arrived at Darent Valley Hospital (DVH) for just 4 days. This is Bernie's ONLY visit to #Kent this year, so our hospital is very lucky to have been chosen! Mayor of Dartford David Mote and Mayoress Ellen came to visit Bernie and let the project team know what is important to them regarding local cancer information services.
Blanket AppealOur sincere thanks to all those who have been busy knitting and crochet blankets for our older patients. So far we have received over 50 blankets, please keep them coming! Rita Henderson, a patient on Ebony Ward has been using her blanket during the day to keep her legs warm and she is very much looking forward to taking it home so she can continue using it.
Brain Awareness WeekIt's Brain Awareness Week and today the Trust's focus is on #Stroke. Paula Briley and Kate Bowen, Stroke Association Support Coordinators along with James Cross Volunteer have been manning a stand in the main foyer raising awareness and offering lots of information to staff, patients and visitors.
Careers EventOn Wednesday 27th March 19, Maria Kelly Trust Apprenticeship Coordinator went to support the North Kent College Dartford Campus annual Careers Fair, this was a really well attended event with the public sector employers and many private sector business's in attendance. The event was organised by the Level 3 Event & Hospitality Students for the Students.
Celebrating SuccessA fabulous Celebrating Success event was held at Darent Valley Hospital for staff in recognition of a 'GOOD' rating from the CQC. It was a wonderful opportunity for staff to showcase all of their good work and come together socially, which is sometimes difficult to achieve with everybody being busy caring for our patients and each other.
Celebrating Success EventOn Thursday 16th May, the Lecture Hall in the Philip Farrant Education Centre was buzzing with the sound of success. 24 teams from different departments at the Trust joined together to showcase some of the successful projects they had been part of over the last few years. Some were award winning, some had been recognised nationally, but all were innovative.
Congratulations Dr SaifuddinOur sincere congratulations to Dr Mohammad Saifuddin, Gastroenterology SpR and chair of the Junior Doctor Service Improvement Board (JDSIB) on his recent outstanding achievement. Dr Saifuddin is currently undertaking a Masters-level diploma in Healthcare Finance with the Healthcare Finance Management Association (HFMA).

Electronic Observations go LIVE!Congratulations to Palm Ward who successfully went live on Wednesday 6th November with Patientrack electronic observations (eObs), from 10.00 am onwards all patients had their observations recorded using hand-held devices at the bedside.

Pain Free at LastAfter 11 years of pain Elizabeth Somerville, aged 26 from Manchester is pain free thanks for Professor Sriprasad. Elizabeth, a Palliative Care Nurse suffers from Fowler Syndrome and also has chronic pain which means she has been unable to work for the last year.

This is Me Wrist BandsWe are proud to announce that we are the FIRST hospital in Kent to introduce 'This is Me' wrist bands for patients. The wrist band assist staff and other healthcare professionals identify patients with #Dementia and other cognitive impairments, making them aware that certain patients cannot easily share information about themselves and may need some enhanced care / support.
Trust Board Sample Patients mealsToday Trust Board members were invited to sample our patient's food in a tasting session laid on by Chris Cheel, Catering Manager and his team from Serco. Chief Executive Louise Ashley, Chairman Peter Coles and fellow board members sampled both the lunch and dinner menu on offer to our patients, they also sampled some modified textured meals. Modified texture meals are provided to patients with chewing and swallowing difficulties.
We are 'GOOD'We welcome the Care Quality Commission's (CQC) report published on the 22nd August where the Trust has now been rated as 'Good'. Louise Ashley the CEO said ' I feel very proud to lead an organisation with such committed, compassionate, skilled and hardworking staff. It is great news that we have now been rated as 'Good' and gives us a strong footing for our Journey to Outstanding #J2O.

Teddy Bear HospitalGreat news! Our recent Teddy Bears Hospital visits went extremely well. This time we welcomed two groups, one from a local Brownies group and one from a mixed Brownies and Rainbows group. The aim of these hospitals is to alleviate any fears the Rainbows may have regarding coming into hospital and to teach them what a positive experience it can be.
World Sepsis DayThursday 13th September was World Sepsis. The day itself, is the culmination of a global effort to educate and engage both the general public and political powers in the steps required to lower the incidence of deaths caused by Sepsis. Sepsis is a global emergency that kills about 20,000 people worldwide every single day.

HAHT Turns 10Happy 10th Birthday to our Hospital at Home Team (HAHT) who started their service on 1st August 2008. The aim of the HAHT is to provide short term acute medical care within the homes of our patients. Two of the original team members remain Clare Yates and Penny Taylor.
Pine Therapy Unit Garden PartyPine Therapy (Chemotherapy) Unit held their annual summer garden party on the 31st July, and what a great success it was. The party was attended by many past and present patients and their families.

Members of our executive team visited wards and departments at all of our hospital sites, marking the #NHS70 birthday and thanking staff for their hard work and dedication to our patients. Yo Ho Ho Fun on Willow WardShiver me timbers - lots of pirates came aboard Willow Ward on Friday ready for their new Fun Friday. The idea started when we had several boy patients aged 8yrs to 10yr who said that they wanted to be pirates for the day.
Couple Marry in just 24 HoursOn Wednesday 4th April Mandy Helen Lucitt aged 57 and Kevin McCarthy aged 62 from West Kingsdown tied the knot on Oak Ward at Darent Valley Hospital (DVH). Mandy and Kevin have been together for 42 years and have three children Jessica, Rudi and Ryan although sadly they lost Ryan to cot death in 1984.
Multiple Sclerosis Awareness WeekIt was Multiple Sclerosis Trust (MS) Awareness week and our MS team hosted a stand in the main foyer raising awareness of the condition. MS can affect the brain and/or spinal cord, causing a wide range of potential symptoms, including problems with vision, arm or leg movement, sensation or balance.
New Reclining Chairs in MaternityWe have taken delivery of 42 new reclining leather chairs for dads and birthing partners to use. These are definitely more comfortable than our old ones, allowing partners to sit in comfort whilst they are supporting our new Mum's.
Bexley and Sidcup Lions Club DonationOur thanks for the continuous support of Lions Club - Bexley & Sidcup, who have been very supportive of Prostate Cancer Research at the hospital. They presented a cheque for £750 to Prof. Madaan, who talked to them about the exciting developments in urology that are being assisted by Valley Hospital Charity funds.
Chronic Pain GroupChronic Pain affects millions of people in the UK. It is often an invisible condition which dominates the lives of those suffering from it. The Chronic Pain Team hold education sessions for our patients over nine weeks.
London Marathon 2018 RunnersOur sincere thanks to Gary Wright, Ann Moyles and Joanne Wigginton who all ran the London Marathon in aid of Darent Valley Hospital. Well done to you all, especially on such a hot day, you all did amazingly raising lots of my for such a worthy charity.
New Readybeds on RosewoodFrancine Payne, and her husband Chris and daughter Rachael visited Rosewood Ward on Friday 27th April, and were reunited with staff who had cared for James, their son/brother who sadly lost his battle to cancer on 9th February this year.
Babies Who Share New Royal Baby's BirthdayCongratulations to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge who yesterday welcomed into the world at 11.01am their third child, a boy. Here at Darent Valley Hospital (DVH) we saw 16 babies born on the same day, 9 boys and 7 girls. One of the boys, Toby James Scott who parents Natalie and Ben are from Erith was born just 1 minute after the royal baby, weighing in at 7lb 8oz.

BaisakhiOn Sunday 15th April, Sally George, Head of Fundraising at Darent Valley Hospital, was invited along to Dartford Gurdwara - Guru Hargobind Sahib, on the last day of Baisakhi, the festival which celebrates Sikh New Year and the founding of the Sikh community, known as the Khalsa.
New Chairs in CRCOn Thursday 12th April the Children's Resources Centre (CRC) took delivery of the new child friendly seating, which is part of a project, funded by Winners Chapel based in Dartford, to transform the children's outpatients waiting area into a more engaging child friendly space.
Planned Care Centre OpenedDartford and Gravesham NHS Trust celebrated the official launch of its Planned Care Centre (PCC) at Queen Mary's Hospital on the 11th April. Peter Coles, Chairman for the Trust congratulated all staff on their hard work and dedication in making the PCC such a success. The PCC treats patients from Bexley and surrounding areas; as well as Dartford offering expert patient care. It provides a range of clinical services delivered by Queen Mary's Hospital staff and those from DVH in Dartford.
World Parkinson's DayThe 11th April was World Parkinson's Day and the theme of the day is Unite. Parkinson's organisations around the world are coming together to mark the day. In the hospital's foyer our Parkinson's Nurse Drinda Harrington, along with members of the Gravesend Support Group and also Volunteer Co-ordinator Nansubuga Kolawole from Parkinson's UK manned a stand.
Louise Ashley appointed CEOThe Trust is pleased to announce that Louise Ashley has been appointed as the new substantive Chief Executive of Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust (DGT). The appointment was made following open competition and a national search.
Ice Ice BabyDuring the recent disruption caused by the Beast from the East and Storm Emma the maternity department had sNOw problem coping thanks to dedicated staff who braved the elements to ensure that it was business as usual. Many staff worked extra shifts or even stayed overnight in some cases to make sure that there was no disruption to services both in the hospital and out in the community.

Welcome New NursesOn 18th January we welcomed a new cohort of 11 nurses from Italy. They are all qualified nurses in Italy, and will spend the next few months studying to pass the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) entrance exams.

96 Bus RouteTransport for London have notified us that from Saturday 16 December 2017 they are re-routing route 96 to serve Darent Valley Hospital and use part of the Fastrack Bus Rapid Transit system between Dartford and Bluewater.
Diabetes Team Raising Awareness of Diabetic KetoacidosisDiabetes Team are raising awareness of Diabetic Ketoacidosis by visiting adult wards with their Diabetes Tea Trolley and asking staff to complete a diabetes questionnaire. The trolley will be making its way around the hospital for the rest of the week and started on Beech Ward.

Gynae Dept Now Offer hysteroscopic polypectomy with MyosureWomen now have more choice as the Gynaecology Outpatient Department is pleased to offer women outpatient hysteroscopic polypectomy with Myosure. HIP Leaflet LaunchedOn Monday 20th March 2017, the Trust launched its new Hospital Information for Patients leaflet in the hospitals lobby. Patients and staff were given copies of the new leaflet, and Senior Managers and the Executive team were there to support the launch and engage with staff and visitors to the hospital.

Mouth Care MattersSarah has developed a training programme at DVH that is conducted on the wards for up to 15 minutes and is undertaken on the patients. The training is adhoc and user friendly to enhance mouth care for our patients.
Morning at the FlicksAfter all the patient washes were completed Ebony Ward, which cares for older people turned one of their bays into a morning at the flicks. The curtains were drawn, chairs and beds moved into place and the large screen television switched on.
Dementia Afternoon TeaEvery fortnight the Marks and Spencer's based at Darent Valley Hospital kindly donate cakes to Ebony Ward, that are then given to patients and their families as part of a nostalgic afternoon tea. Music from past eras is played and the best china dusted off for this special event.

Sue Barrett Wins AwardSue Barrett, Parking and Security Operative at Darent Valley Hospital has been selected a winner at a recent Indigo award ceremony held on the 8th December at the Royal Airforce Museum, Hendon. Indigo manage the car parks and external security at Darent Valley Hospital. There were a total of 140 nominations over 12 categories and congratulations to Sue on winning her category outstanding off-street parking.

Baking for BabiesOn Wednesday 7th December, Midwife Mel Henderson and the Maternity Department held a Christmas card and cake sale in the main foyer of the hospital to raise money for our Little Buds Fund, which supports our Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU).
Carol ServiceToday a Carol Service was held at Darent Valley Hospital supported by the Salvation Army band. The service was well attended and was followed by refreshments and mince pies.
