Pathology Turns on its New Track

Pathology Turns on New Track

Pathology staff are excited about the official start-up of their new automated track in the blood sciences lab on Monday 5th March at Darent Valley Hospital. The brand new 4-lane track will allow biochemistry samples to be transported rapidly around the lab to the correct analysers. Chairman Peter Coles and Interim Director of Strategy and Planning Leslieann Osborn were delighted to be given a live demonstration of the new track and both had the opportunity to place a patient’s routine blood sample on the track. They then followed each of their samples around the system which gave the first results in just 30 minutes.

Alistair Lindsay, General Manager said “This investment is a crucial milestone in the integration of pathology services across Medway and Dartford, forming the North Kent Pathology Service. Dartford will become the hub laboratory under the partnership between the two Trusts’ pathology services, processing more than double its current workload, so this new equipment is essential.”

Within the North Kent Pathology Service, staff from across both labs will work together under single management to provide services from both the hub at Dartford and satellite at Medway processing urgent and specialist work.

Maadh Aldouri, Clinical Director, said “We have looked forward to this moment for many months. I am really pleased to finally see the new track and analysers up and running, helping us to deliver a first-rate pathology service for our clinical colleagues.”

Colin Brisley, Head of Blood Sciences, said “I am very proud of what staff have done during the 6-week period of removing the old track and installing the new track. They have worked tirelessly manually centrifuging samples and then loading them onto analysers through this busy winter period, minimising any impact on turnaround times for results. Their dedication has been above and beyond the call of duty, and they have come in overnight and at weekends to help resolve teething problems that arose on occasion during the installation of new equipment.  A massive thanks to them.”
