Dartford MP welcomes the modernisation of stroke care in Kent and Medway

Dartford MP welcomes modernisation

DARTFORD MP Gareth Johnson has welcomed proposals to create three 24/7 hyper acute stroke units in Kent and Medway in a bid to improve care and reduce death and disability from a #stroke.

At the moment, if you have a stroke, urgent care is given at six hospitals, including Darent Valley Hospital. The new proposals mean three hyper acute units will be formed offering the most up-to-date care and Darent Valley Hospital is one of five hospitals in the area being considered for this service. These changes are proposed by the NHS following the success of hyper acute units in other parts of the country and will benefit from £40million of investment.

Gareth Johnson MP said: “Every year 400 stroke patients are treated at Darent Valley Hospital, with hundreds more treated for mini-strokes. All the evidence suggests that having access to a hyper acute unit is the best way to treat stroke patients. Currently there are none of these in Kent and I’m pleased this will change in the near future.

“I would like to see one of these units located at Darent Valley Hospital so that people in the area get the best treatment at their nearest hospital if they have a stroke. Having a better-equipped, hyper acute stroke unit would be great for our local hospital.

“Dartford is forecast to have one of the highest population growths in Kent in the next decade and, coupled with our aging population, it means there is a vital need for such a service.

“I hope people will take part in this consultation and support Darent Valley in its bid to host one of these units.”

Full details of the consultation, which runs until April 13, can be found at http://www.dvh.nhs.uk/…/kent-and-medway-stroke-service-con…/

A public meeting about the changes will take place on Tuesday, March 13 at Clocktower Pavilion, St Mary’s Road, Swanley between 2pm and 4pm.
